5. Tuition in the Sciences, Engineering, Medicine, Economics and Sociology in the University would pre- sumably be first class but. I consider it to be of the greatest importance that the standard of Chinese not as a specialist subject, but as a general requirement of all students should be as high as the general standard in a Chinese University.

6. In my view increased expenditure on British Council activities in China should be complementary rather than at loggerheads to the scheme.
